Derby West Indian association & Derby Museums: Culture and Legacy

“A lot of the stories will bring a tear to your eye, but they provide a real insight into what Caribbeans who made England their home had to go through and how organisations like DWICA provided much-needed support.”

- Devon Daley - BBC Broadcaster, producer, DJ.

This series of images was created for Derby West Indian Association’s (DWICA) and Derby Museums’ exhibition ‘legacy and culture’.

An exhibition which collated the rich heritage and legacy of DWICA, and its members role in the Derby community since its inception in 1955 - particularly for those of west Indian heritage.

The photographs were created to accompany recordings of oral history interviews which were conducted by DWICA’s Elders’ officer, Adam Slater.

Two settings were created, one for the elders who have used the centre as a social space, and on other for the volunteers and staff of DWICA who have been pivotal in carrying out DWICA’s aims.
